A 100-year-old mother and her 81-year-old son have spoken of their relief of being among the first people to receive their second dose of the Covid-19 Pfizer vaccine at the Vaccination Centre at The Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital (RJAH).

Phyllis Jones and her son, Mike Jones, had their second vaccinations yesterday (Tuesday), after having their first doses back in January.

After having their latest jabs, the mother and son team, who live together in Trefonen near Oswestry, have said that the future feels “much brighter and safer” and are looking forward to some eventual normality.

The pair were given their second doses by Barbara Mackereth, Vaccinator and Staff Nurse.

The centenarian, who spent her career as an Auxiliary Nurse, said: “I feel extremely relieved that we’ve had both of our jabs now, not only that but I feel absolutely fine after having it. I didn’t feel a thing!

“The sun is shining today, and the future feels much brighter and safer for us. We’ve got that added protection now.

“Thank you to all of the staff working in the Vaccination Centre, who are working so hard and looking after everyone so well. I’m very grateful.”

Mike, a retired Electricity Board Labourer, said: “As mum said, we definitely feel a sense of relief and will feel that bit safer knowing we’ve had our second dose of the vaccine.

“We’re both just looking forward to some normality, once restrictions ease that bit more. Mum’s really sociable and has missed being around people.

“Before covid, Thursday would be the day when I would take her out for a coffee and it’s the simple things like that, which we both miss. We’re hearing lots of people upset that they won’t be able to go on holiday again this year but quite frankly, I just want to take mum out for a coffee. Sometimes the small things are the most important.”

The family links don’t stop there for Phyllis and Mike, as Phyllis’ granddaughter is married to RJAH staff member, Lee Osborne, who is the lead Project Manager for the Vaccination Centre at the Oswestry-based hospital.
