AFC Morda United is delighted to confirm its formation with a significant new investment from local businessmen and lifelong supporters Tom Brown and Phil Brown, marking the beginning of an ambitious new chapter in the club’s history.
The father-and-son partnership combines strong community ties with proven business success. Tom Brown, a former Morda United player and owner of The Meat Man, has joined forces with Phil Brown, owner of The Food Trader, to provide strategic financial backing aimed at restoring the club’s competitive edge and long-term sustainability.
This investment is designed to support development both on and off the pitch, including strengthening the playing squad, enhancing training and matchday facilities, supporting youth progression pathways, and improving overall operational infrastructure.
For Tom Brown, the move represents a deeply personal commitment.
“Morda United means a great deal to me. I spent many proud years here as a player, and the club helped shape who I am. To now be in a position where I can give something back is incredibly rewarding. To do this alongside my dad makes it even more meaningful. We believe this club can achieve great things again.”
Phil Brown added:
“Morda United is at the heart of this community. We want to help build something stable and ambitious for the long term. Our goal is not just short-term success, but creating a strong foundation that players, supporters, and future generations can be proud of.”
A club spokesperson said:
“Next season, AFC Morda United will enter the Montgomeryshire Amateur Football League with its flagship Men’s First Team competing at Tier 5 of the Welsh football pyramid. Historically, Morda United’s greatest successes came in Welsh football, and returning to this league feels like a natural homecoming, a chance to establish the club where it has always felt most connected. Starting at this level is a deliberate decision. The aim is to earn progression on the pitch while taking the time to grow the club off it. Strong foundations matter. Building the right culture matters. Creating something that lasts matters.
We are also planning on growing our club on the field with a new Women’s Team, as well as development squads for both boys and girls.
“But this project is about far more than just the teams on the pitch. Oswestry is a large town without a grassroots football club representing it. There is a gap in the local sporting landscape, and AFC Morda United intends to fill it, not just with football, but with community.”
The club are hosting an Open Evening on Friday 20th March for any supporters new and old, and any potential committee members, backroom staff, players, investors and partners to attend. The club are open to ideas and discussion around their plans and how the future of the club shall be shaped.
New Manager and Secretary Nathan Bartram said:
“Our ambition is to make Morda United the place to be on a Saturday afternoon. A club where families gather, where young players look up to the first team, where volunteers feel valued, and where local businesses are proud to be involved as we build a genuine football family for men, women, boys and girls.
“That starts on the pitch with the right culture created by the management and players. To be afforded the opportunity to create what that looks is a privilege for everyone who wears our shirt. It’s the size of the history here and the chance to create so much more that excites me most. There’s a demand that comes with the name Morda United, famous in our local area, and we need to ensure it remains so for this new generation. I can’t wait to see what a game day down at Morda in this new era looks like.”
Chairman Mathew Edwards pointed towards this partnership as a huge chance to grow the club as a whole:
“I’m proud to help bring AFC Morda United back to local football. The welcome from the community has been fantastic, and while there’s still plenty of work to do before the new season, this rebirth is about honouring the club’s spirit and building a strong future for everyone connected with Morda and the wider town of Oswestry. With The Meat Man as our principal partner and Tom and Phil joining our committee this brings a wealth of football experience, Morda history, and business acumen”
Vice Chair Chris Grommell highlighted just how important it is to build a strong bond with the new club’s local community:
“There is a specific kind of energy you feel when you step onto a pitch that truly belongs to its community. Having played against Morda United in the past, I remember that energy vividly. It wasn’t just about the eleven players on the grass; it was about the crowd and the unmistakable sense that the club was the soul of the village.
“For me, this project has been about more than just results. My primary motivation for getting involved is simple, restoring that “community club” feel. Any lingering doubts I might have had were settled during our first committee meeting. It was immediately clear that every person in that room shared the same singular objective. We aren’t just rebuilding a team; we are rebuilding a local institution.”
The clubs Open Evening is on Friday 20th March at 7.30pm at Morda Social Club.
