Oswestry Town Council invites the public and media to attend the unveiling of a blue plaque commemorating Ian Hunter, lead singer of Mott the Hoople, at 11am on Saturday 26 September on York Street, Oswestry (SY11 1NA) – the house where he was born in 1939.
The plaque will be unveiled by the Mayor of Oswestry, Cllr Jonathan Upton, alongside Ian Hunter’s grandson, local musician Jay Patterson. A video message from Ian Hunter, who now lives in Connecticut, USA, will be played, and a number of fans are expected to attend.
The project has been organised by Cllr Duncan Kerr and funded by Oswestry Town Council. Cllr Kerr has driven the project from the outset, working with Ian Hunter’s family, fans and the local community to bring the tribute to fruition.
The Mayor said: “It is a privilege to unveil this plaque in honour of Ian Hunter, one of Oswestry’s most remarkable sons. His achievements deserve to be celebrated here, in the town where his story began, and I am delighted the council has been able to support this fitting tribute.”
Following the unveiling, the video message will be shown at the Hermon Arts Centre, Oak Street (SY11 1LF). Both events are free to attend, with donations welcomed for Oswestry and Borders Foodbank.
Members of the public and media are welcome at both the plaque unveiling and the video screening.
