Members of Borderland Rotary recently enjoyed their annual canal walk and dinner, taking a scenic route that crossed the England–Wales border not once, but twice. The group set off through the historic Chirk Tunnel and continued across the impressive Chirk Aqueduct into England, before returning to Wales for dinner at the Castle Bistro in Chirk.
“It’s just great that Thomas Telford’s engineering masterpiece from 1802 is still standing and in such fantastic condition,” said Borderland Rotary President Steve Jerman. “It reminds me of my childhood near Chirk. I’ve lived abroad for many years, so it’s lovely to revisit my old haunts – although I still don’t like the chocolatey smell from the old Cadbury’s factory!”
The aqueduct and neighbouring viaduct remain iconic landmarks of the border between Shropshire and North Wales, and serve as powerful reminders of the region’s rich industrial heritage.
