Tarrah Lewis gave a presentation recently to Borderland Rotary explaining that Shropshire Peer Counselling & Advocacy Service, or PCAS for short, was founded just over thirty years ago by the Shropshire Disability Consortium to provide a community based independent advocacy service for people with a disability over the age of eighteen. Based in Oswestry, PCAS covers all of Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin.
Ms Lewis said, “Although we are based in an office in Oswestry, just about all our work takes place at individuals’ homes as this is normally where the support is required as we help with isolation and make sure clients make informed decisions about their welfare. We also communicate with service providers – local authorities, utility companies – and check that they honour commitments and do what they have promised”.
PCAS aim to safeguard people who are vulnerable, support disabled people at risk of losing their homes or responsibility and empower people who need a stronger voice.
“As our work is mostly confidential, not that many people have heard of the organisation – we are a charity, funded by public donations, grants and gifts and we need all the support we can get so that we, in turn, can support others who have more challenging lives.
