Students from North Shropshire College’s (NSC’s) Oswestry Campus have been celebrating World Mental Health Day by providing information to students, staff and visitors alike and also by wearing yellow and painting nails to mark the occasion.
The College has seen a significant increase in recent years of young people dealing with a number of mental health issues. The College has hubs available at both Oswestry and Walford to support students of all ages with any particular issues they may be having in terms of personal issues, or their academic studies and workloads.
Access to Higher Education Health Student Jordan Rogers comments, ‘It’s important for us to mark this day about mental health issues, education is the key to stopping ignorance.’
Megan Morris who studies the Law and Criminology course says, ‘From personal experience with my family I’ve experienced a lack of understanding about mental health issues and its key for people to be more aware.’
Both students are utilising the hub facilities at the College. There are two hubs covering academic and emotional support. Megan goes on to say, ‘I use the hub daily, I suffer with anxiety and it provides me with a safe haven, a quiet environment where I can work effectively and see my friends. I know without the hub I don’t think I’d still be at College, it’s a fantastic resource students from all courses who need help can use.’
If you would like to find out more about NSC, please visit the website at www.nsc.ac.uk There are open events just around the corner, so to have a look around the College and visit the hubs, prospective students are welcome to do so. Walford Open Day is Sat 20th October 10am-2pm and Oswestry Open Evening is Wed 24th October 5pm-8pm.
