Three critically-acclaimed films will be screened at Ellesmere’s Our Space Community centre over the next three months as part of its free Saturday Cinema programme for the over-60s.

The 1959 comedy-drama Billy Liar is being shown on Saturday,  February 1, with Tom Courtenay in the title role as a young undertaker’s assistant who day-dreams of escaping his working class roots.  The film is based on a novel by Keith Waterhouse and also features Julie Christie, Leonard Rossiter, Rodney Bewes and Wilfred Pickles.

Another classic comedy-drama, Willy Russell’s  Educating Rita, starring Julie Walters and Michael Caine, is on the bill for Saturday March 1.  Set in Liverpool, it follows the relationship between a young hairdresser trying to improve her education and her cynical Open University lecturer who has a drink problem.

The multiple Oscar-winning movie, The Artist has been selected for screening on Saturday, April 5. Released in 2011, it’s a mainly silent film in black and white and it tells the story of a fading silent movie star and a  rising young actress in the early days of ‘talkies’

All three films will be shown between 10.30 and 12.30.

Our Space assistant manager Mike Grierson said: “The idea of the Saturday  film club is to provide an inclusive cinema experience for older film fans, including those affected by dementia.  We try to offer a wide range of classic movies. There’s no charge, and we’re grateful to Ismay’s fashion shop for sponsoring free refreshments.”
