Derwen College, celebrated a double victory at the Cricket Shropshire Awards held at The Shropshire, Telford, on Friday 7 November.
The College was named SEND School of the Year, recognising its outstanding commitment to promoting health, fitness, and inclusion through cricket. Sports and Leisure Co-ordinator Stephen Evans also received the SEND Teacher of the Year award for inspiring students and championing inclusive sport.
Cricket sessions, both indoor and outdoor, are a regular part of enrichment and wellbeing activities at Derwen College, helping students develop confidence, teamwork, and a lifelong love of sport. The College’s partnership with Cricket Shropshire ensures students have access to high-quality coaching and opportunities to participate in matches and community events.
Guests, including Derwen College students Ru Aylwin and Ollie Walker, enjoyed a celebratory atmosphere as achievements in sport were recognised. Both students, who are on Hospitality & Food pathways, enjoy cricket sessions as part of their enrichment and wellbeing activities. Both are also Young Leaders, and have completed qualifications in umpiring as well as coaching and supporting their peers.
Derwen College Principal & CEO Meryl Green said: “Winning SEND School of the Year and SEND Teacher of the Year is a testament to the dedication of our staff and students. We are very proud of the wide selection of sports available to students at College, and the community partnerships bring people together and support wellbeing for all.”
