GCSE results for pupils at Ellesmere College saw nearly a third of all grades in the top 9-7 range (A*/A).

The top performers included Ellie, from Shrewsbury, who achieved eight grade 9s, Alex, from Oswestry, and Harry, from Shrewsbury, who both secured six grade 9s.

Ellesmere-based Megan also achieved five grade 9s.

Head of the school, Jonathan Shaw, said he was delighted.

He said: “Congratulations to all Ellesmere Year 11 pupils who received their examination results today.

“All have worked hard and many have exceeded expectations and should be immensely proud of their achievements.

“While academic success is a central part of their education, we are equally proud of the well-rounded young people that Ellesmere helps to develop.

“The vast majority of our Year 11 pupils contribute fully to school life, participating in a host of co-curricular activities including music, drama, the Combined Cadet Force (CCF), DofE and sport.

“Their commitment, enthusiasm, and breadth of involvement are a credit to both themselves and the school community.

“Well done to all our Year 11 pupils, and thank you to our dedicated teachers and supportive parents for their key roles in supporting and encouraging them along the way.”

The majority of those finishing Year 11 and getting their GCSE results today (THURS) will return to the expanding Sixth Form at Ellesmere College in September to continue their academic journey and study their choice of A Levels, BTEC, or the International Baccalaureate (IB) for the next two years.

The GCSE results follow on from impressive A Level results for students at Ellesmere College last week, which saw 57% of all grades in the top A*/A/B category and some outstanding individual performances by students who have secured places at top universities across the UK and overseas.

The results also mirror those of the students who completed the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma and BTEC Diploma and were given their results last month.

The 2026 IB Diploma results at Ellesmere College saw a number of students achieving 30 or more points, the gold standard having studied six subjects and completed the Theory of Knowledge course.

Students studying the BTEC Diploma qualification at Ellesmere College celebrated another year of 100% pass results that included several Distinctions, the equivalent to A* at A level. Several Ellesmere students even completed their BTEC Diploma alongside an additional A level subject to broaden their options into university and degree apprenticeships.
