Summer finally arrived in a blaze of sunshine at the end of May, prompting an explosion of colour as weigelia and azaleas took over from the faded blooms of lilac and wisteria. There must be well over a hundred rosebuds on my climbing rose ‘Claire Austin’. So much to look forward to in the garden this summer!
We have an eclectic selection of gardens for you to visit here in North Powys this July. A new opener for us this year is Vicarage Farm, Llangynog (SY10 0HG). Surrounded by the stunning views of the Pennant Valley, an acre of land has been converted into a large mixed garden using no pesticides, encouraging bees and butterflies to thrive. A short drive away is the enchanting church of St Melangell, with its atmospheric shrine and fascinating history. As a complete contrast, 1 Church Bank, Welshpool (SY21 7DR) is open the same weekend. This intimate town garden is full of unusual features where sounds of water fill the air. Both open Sat 4th and Sun 5th, 12-5pm, with homemade teas available.
On Sunday 12 July, Eve’s Garden near Llansantfraidd (SY22 6TB) will be opening 11am-5pm. Vibrant borders packed with colour surround the house throughout the summer. There are level paths suitable for wheelchair users. Homemade teas. Another new opener for the National Garden Scheme is Llanfechain Village (SY22 6UQ). Open Sunday 26 July 11am-4pm, this beautiful historic village is in a glorious setting on the River Cain. Seven very different gardens, including the school community garden, will be showing what can be done with gardens ranging in size from courtyard to almost an acre. Although there is partial wheelchair access, the gardens are spread over a wide area (maps provided!). Admission £6 (children free). Homemade teas in the village hall.
