It may still only be July but one Shropshire school is already celebrating the first exam results this summer and they show huge success for the students.

As well as GCSEs and A levels, students at Ellesmere College can also study for the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma and BTEC Sports and Coaching Development Diploma – both of which published results this week.

At Ellesmere, IB results were higher than the global average of 30 points, out of a possible 45, with students successful in the Diploma achieving an impressive average score of 34.5 points.

Of the cohort at Ellesmere, 16% achieved 40 points or more, with one student being placed in the top IB students worldwide by achieving an impressive 44 points – the equivalent of five A*s at A level.

The BTEC results continue to impress with students celebrating another year of 100% pass results that included several Distinctions, equivalent to A* at A level.

In both the Extended Diploma, equal to three A Levels, and the Diploma, equal to two  A levels, all students passed with Distinction and Merit awards.

Headmaster at Ellesmere College, Vicky Pritt Roberts, congratulated all Ellesmere Sixth Form students who completed the IB and BTEC this year and commented on their hard work.

She said: “I commend these students for how well they manage the rigorous demands of their chosen course of study so effectively, whilst taking advantage of the many co-curricular programmes on offer.

“I am delighted for our pupils who have worked so tirelessly and consequently done so well in the International Baccalaureate Diploma and BTEC programmes.

“They have certainly worked very hard both in and out of the classroom and achieved an excellent set of results and, consequently, are exceptionally well prepared for university or their chosen career path.”

The BTEC Diploma is a two A level equivalent course that students pursue alongside a third A level in a different subject area.

Six students out of this year’s cohort at Ellesmere opted to complete the Extended Diploma. Four of these students gained a distinction, two of which achieved triple distinction.

Students that take the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma study six subjects and complete the Theory of Knowledge course and must achieve at least 24 points to achieve the Diploma, with certification for those who don’t pass the 24-point threshold.

Other pupils who study other pathways at Ellesmere will receive their A Level results on August 14 and GCSE results on August 21.
