What does someone who goes to the gym look like? The honest answer: nothing in particular. I recently overheard someone say, “He doesn’t even look like he goes to the gym,” and it made me pause. Are we expecting to see a bodybuilder, veins protruding, weights clanging, shouting between reps? That stereotype is loud and recognisable, but it’s also narrow, and for most people who train regularly, far from the truth.

Too often, we lose sight of why we go to the gym in the first place: our health. Not just physical, but mental, and even spiritual. Yes, our bodies may change with consistent training, but those outward changes are only part of the story. We cannot visibly measure growing confidence, yet a disciplined gym routine doesn’t just build muscle, it also builds a backbone: the ability to show up, push through difficulties, recognise your limits, and sometimes say no.

People go to the gym for many different reasons. For some, it’s about becoming bigger and stronger. For others, it’s about moving without pain, improving mental health, or simply feeling more comfortable in their own skin. All of these motivations are valid. The gym isn’t one-size-fits-all; it’s a facility people use in ways that suit them.

That’s why diversity in the gym matters. A good gym isn’t filled with one type of person, but a mix, beginners alongside experienced lifters. People at different stages of life, with different body types and goals. Members and coaches, each with their own expertise, creating an environment that brings out the best in one another.

A good gym breaks stereotypes and makes people feel welcome. At Coach House Fitness, we’ve worked hard to build a space where people feel seen, not judged.

So, what does someone who goes to the gym look like? Anybody, everybody, maybe even you.
