A former Royal Shrewsbury Hospital nurse has traded her scrubs for an apron to launch a new, inclusive community friendly café aimed at tackling rural isolation and supporting those living with dementia.

Kate’s Cafe, located at the busy Shotatton Crossroads (between Oswestry and Shrewsbury), officially opened its doors to provide locals, commuters, and vulnerable groups with a warm, judgment-free space to connect.

The cafe is the brainchild of Monica Sharma, who spent over a decade working in various roles within the NHS including serving as a surgical staff nurse and working in local nursing homes. After leaving the trust in November 2025, Monica decided to channel her clinical background and passion for care into a new venture that directly serves Shropshire’s rural community.

“We are proud that our cafe is dementia-friendly,” says owner Monica. “Because of my background at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital and in nursing homes, I know how vital it is to have an environment where there is nobody to judge visitors. I want the elderly and those living with dementia to come out, have a cup of tea, and just chat. This allows me to keep doing my job as a nurse, but in a completely different way.”

Beyond offering hearty traditional breakfasts, lunchtime baps, fresh espresso and locally baked treats, the cafe’s core mission is to combat the social isolation that frequently affects rural communities and older demographics. Designed to be child-friendly, dog-friendly, and fully accessible, Kate’s Cafe serves traditional cafe comfort food with a strong focus on local sourcing and unlike many rural spots, the cafe remains open from 8:00 AM until 6:00 PM, offering a welcome late-afternoon social window before evening tea.

“I don’t want to turn this into a formal restaurant,” Monica explains. “I want it to be a community space. A place where carers feel confident bringing their loved ones for a safe day out, and where everyone feels like they belong.”
