A former patient turned researcher at the Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital (RJAH) is set to take on the ultimate endurance challenge to raise vital funds for the hospital that transformed her life.

Larissa, who currently works as a post-doctoral research fellow at RJAH, will be running a full marathon alongside her partner, Andy, in a bid to raise £4,000 for the RJAH Charity. The challenge marks a remarkable personal milestone for Larissa, who has battled a long history of knee injuries and surgeries.

Since the age of 13, Larissa has suffered from recurrent patellar dislocations, resulting in chronic pain and significant instability. She has undergone four knee operations—two of which were performed at RJAH—making the decision to run a marathon a powerful symbol of her recovery and resilience.

“Running a marathon is something I never thought possible,” said Larissa. “Thanks to the incredible care I received at RJAH and the opportunity to work here as a researcher, I’ve seen first-hand how the hospital changes lives. This is my way of giving something back.”

Her partner Andy, who last ran a marathon over a decade ago, will be joining her on the start line. While he jokes about aiming for a top-10 finish or at least completing the distance “within 10 working days,” his motivation is deeply rooted in seeing the impact of RJAH through Larissa’s work.

“Being close to the work Larissa does and seeing how important RJAH is to so many people’s lives has really inspired me,” said Andy. “This marathon is our chance to support a cause that means so much to both of us.”

Together, the couple is taking on 26.2 miles to raise funds that will help RJAH continue delivering world-class orthopaedic care and research.
