Young people across Shropshire and Telford are being offered practical support to turn their business ideas into reality through a new start-up bootcamp from Community Resource.
Developed by the charity’s Employability and Enterprise Programme, the five-day bootcamp is designed for people aged 18 to 30 who are not currently in education, employment or training. It gives aspiring entrepreneurs the skills, knowledge and confidence to take their first steps towards self-employment.
The course covers business planning, market research, selling techniques, elevator pitches, public speaking and networking. Participants also learn about social media, Google and Facebook analytics, tax and National Insurance.
Bootcamps have already taken place in Shrewsbury and Telford. Participants have worked on business plans, made connections with other young entrepreneurs and taken practical steps towards launching their ventures. Ideas have ranged from animation, graphic design and art to dog walking and grooming.
“The business start-up bootcamps have already helped young people develop new skills, build confidence and take the next steps towards self-employment,” said Sophie Eades, Enterprise Coach for the programme. “It’s exciting to see them learn and grow.”
One participant described Sophie as “an amazing presenter” who made complex topics easier to understand. Another said the opportunity to ask questions and receive straightforward guidance had helped them fill gaps in their knowledge.
Support continues after the bootcamp. Participants can access individual guidance to refine their plans, work through challenges and prepare to launch. Eligible young entrepreneurs may also be able to apply for up to £500 through Community Resource’s Bootcamp Small Grants Scheme, subject to terms and conditions. Community Resource is working with the Staffordshire and Shropshire Community Foundation to offer access to grants of up to £2,500 through its SWEF funding scheme.
Sophie brings 25 years of self-employment experience to the programme, having founded and run a marketing, PR and photography business working with sole traders and small businesses.
“Being there at the very start of someone’s journey is special,” she said. “The bootcamp gives young people the fundamentals they can apply to a wide range of business ideas.”
