At Moreton Hall we are passionate about empowering our students to make their voices heard and passionate about social responsibility and involvement in the wider community, so we were delighted to hear that just a few months since finishing her A Level studies, Old Moretonian Hannah Locke (2019) is standing for parliament in next month’s General Election.
Hannah, who is currently on her gap year after completing A Levels in French, History and Psychology, as well as a Pre-U in Mandarin, says she was inspired to throw her hat into the political ring after watching the news of an imminent election unfold: “I was concerned that this was becoming a ‘Brexit election’. I feel strongly that national politics needs to be refocused onto local issues. If elected, I will put party politics aside, and give my constituents a truly representative, non-partisan voice in Westminster.”
As an Independent candidate for Parliamentary seat of Shrewsbury and Atcham, Hannah is striving to become the first female MP in the constituency, and the youngest MP in the country.
If elected, Hannah plans to seek direct opinions from her constituents on every vote, through online opinion polls. She will also seek the advice of longer standing local political figures, to ensure the views and opinions of her constituents are represented in Parliament to the best of her ability.
Hannah will be standing against four other candidates; Conservative Daniel Kawczynski, who has held the seat since 2005, Labour’s Julia Buckley, Nat Green from the Liberal Democrats, and Green Party representative Julian Dean.
With her slogan: ’Localising National Politics’, Hannah’s manifesto says she will campaign to increase voter turnout in general, with a particular focus on young voters and first time voters, as she believes this election may prove to be the most influential in determining the future of our country for quite some time. With Old Moretonian, Amanda Milling already a familiar face in Westminster, Moreton Hall will watch with interest to see if Hannah can achieve her goal.
