The team of healthcare professionals from the High Dependency Unit (HDU) at Oswestry’s specialist orthopaedic hospital have been hailed as January’s winners of the RJAH Stars Award – following their extraordinary efforts during a medical emergency.

They were nominated by Dr Sophie Shapter, Consultant Anaesthetist, who commended the team for their calm and supportive environment, when a patient on the unit at The Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital became critically unwell.

The RJAH Stars Award is presented monthly to individuals and teams who are nominated by their colleagues for going above and beyond.

Sophie said: “The patient ultimately required intubation, ventilation and transfer out to an intensive care unit in the middle of the night – the whole team working on that shift were incredible in supporting and caring for this patient.

“Notably, Shula and Heidi both stayed for several hours after the end of their shift to provide admirable support to their colleagues.

“As a result of their knowledge, skills and superb teamwork, the patient in the situation received the best and safest care.

“I feel extremely privileged that I get to work with, and as an organisation we have, such supportive, dedicated and professional staff. Thank you, team.”

Lowri Mansell, HDU Manager, said: “On behalf of the team, I’d like to thank Sophie for the nomination and her invaluable support. She was as much a part of the team as everyone else on shift that day and night.

“It’s a privilege to work with such a dedicated and skilled team.”

Chief Executive Stacey Keegan presented a keepsake certificate, voucher and box of chocolates – donated by the League of Friends – to the team.

Stacey said: “Examples like these are the reason we celebrate RJAH Stars. The care, compassion and teamwork demonstrated is inspiring and their actions made a significant difference to this patient.

“Thank you to the whole team for their unwavering commitment.”
