Horatio’s Garden Midlands, located at The Robert Jones & Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital, will open its gates to the public on Saturday 18th April as part of the National Garden Scheme, offering visitors a rare opportunity to experience its remarkable therapeutic landscape.

Beautifully designed by renowned garden designer Bunny Guinness, the garden officially opened in September 2019 and has since become a cherished sanctuary for patients, their families, and NHS staff at the Midland Centre for Spinal Injuries. Partly funded by the National Garden Scheme, the space combines innovative horticultural design with accessibility, ensuring that all visitors can fully enjoy its calming environment.

The garden features a rich variety of elements, including social and sheltered areas, raised beds, vibrant seasonal planting, a garden room, and the striking Griffin Glasshouse. A gently winding woodland pathway lined with river birches leads visitors alongside a serpentine rill, filling the space with the tranquil sound of flowing water.

Visitors can expect a sensory experience, with colourful and textured planting designed to stimulate sight, sound, and touch throughout the year. Regularly updated pot displays and thoughtfully curated borders ensure there is always something new to discover.

At the heart of the garden stands a magnificent magnolia tree planted in memory of Dame Agnes Hunt, founder of the hospital. This sits within a wheelchair skills and play area, reflecting the garden’s unique blend of beauty, purpose, and inclusivity.

The garden is fully accessible, reinforcing its mission to provide a welcoming and restorative environment for all.
