Community groups will be joining Oswestry Town Council in a mass tree planting at Brogyntyn Park next week, and residents who would like to join them are welcome along on Wednesday and Thursday.
Over the week, 1,600 hedgerow whips will be planted along a 265-metre stretch of hedgerow in the five-and-a-half-acre parkland.
The natives will include a mix of hawthorn, field maple, hazel and rowan, all important for wildlife and storing carbon. The trees are donated as part of Oswestry Town Council’s wider campaign to help tackle climate change.
Arren Roberts, Oswestry Town Council’s Town Clerk, said: “Everyone now understands the need for more trees, so it’s great to see these hedgerow species being planted. They are ideal for the park as they are fantastic habitats and easy to look after.”
Shropshire Wildlife Trust and young eco warriors from The Marches School will be starting the mass planting on Monday and Tuesday with community volunteers invited to join the planting from Wednesday.
Arren added: “If you would like to help us plant trees that will be enjoyed for many years to come, we would love to see you. The more the merrier!”
Community planting on Wednesday and Thursday will be from 10am to 2pm, and people are welcome to drop by for however long they would like. Enter the park through the main gate on Mount Road, the planting party will be on the far side.
Please dress for the weather and wear sturdy boots. Although some equipment will be available on the day, community volunteers are kindly asked to bring a spade if they have one.
