Members of the Ellesmere and District branch of the Royal British Legion have received long-service awards for their work in supporting the annual Poppy Appeal.

The awards were handed out at a recent branch meeting, with veteran fund-raiser member Danny Powell honoured for 50 years’ service.

Thirty year awards were presented to Arthur Jones and branch president Ian William, while branch secretary Jan Oliver and publicity officer John Shone were recognised for 20 years’ service.

Former appeal organiser Lynn Howard was given a 15 years award, and chairman Bob McBride received a ten years’ service badge.

Ellesmere fashion shop owner Ismay Evans,   who supports the Legion by selling hand-knitted poppies and other fund-raising activities, was also given an award for ten years’ service..

Local appeal organiser Caroline Ford said: “The success of the Poppy Appeal depends so much  on dedication and hard work by a strong network of  volunteers all across the UK. “This is our way of showing appreciation for the tireless work that’s carried out by the team here in Ellesmere and district”
