This week, Karen Roberts, Community Fundraiser for the Lingen Davies Cancer Fund in Shrewsbury, discussed her role in raising funds to support the vital work of the cancer charity. The charity provides assistance to men and women who are newly diagnosed with all types of cancer, those undergoing treatment, and individuals living with cancer.
Founded in 1979, Lingen Davies aims to bring cancer services closer to the communities of Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin, and Mid-Wales. Since its inception, the charity has positively impacted the treatment and care of over 100,000 people through its ongoing work and cancer appeals.
One of its key initiatives is the LiveLife Cancer Awareness Service, which engages with communities to encourage earlier help-seeking behaviour. The service works with groups and organisations and can attend large-scale events upon request. Additionally, in-house sessions are offered for corporate partners and local businesses interested in running cancer awareness courses or dedicated awareness days.
Linda Lade, organiser of Oswestry Cancer Buddies, expressed gratitude towards Lingen Davies, stating, “Everyone in our group, including myself, is thankful for the support provided by Lingen Davies and their treatment centre at Shrewsbury Hospital, equipped with state-of-the-art technology and skilled staff.” She added, “Carers who support someone with cancer—whether by helping with appointments, understanding medical information, or providing emotional support—are themselves entitled to help and support from Lingen Davies.”

Oswestry Cancer Buddies hold drop-in meetings on the second and fourth Thursday of each month in the Meeting Room of Oswestry Library, Arthur Street, from 2:30 to 3:30 pm. The group welcomes anyone affected by cancer, whether as a patient or carer, regardless of cancer type. Linda Lade warmly welcomes attendees with a smile, a cup of tea or coffee, and either a friendly chat or a guest speaker.
