Free workshops at Moreton Hall on Saturday 19th September, led by specialist coaches from the Moreton Hall Lacrosse team and guest coaches.

Moreton Hall will open its lacrosse programme to girls from across the region this Saturday, offering free coaching to girls aged 8 to 18 as interest in the sport grows ahead of its return to the Olympic Games in Los Angeles in 2028.

The workshops are open to beginners and to experienced players, and to girls from any school. Two sessions run on the day: 10am to 12pm for ages 8 to 13, and 12.30pm to 2.30pm for ages 13 to 18. Places are free and must be booked in advance.

A designated Centre of Excellence for lacrosse, Moreton Hall has had one of its strongest starts to a season. Earlier this month the 1st, 2nd and U15 teams all won their titles at the Welsh Rally Championships at Cheltenham Ladies’ College without losing a game, and the 1st Team came away from a second tournament the following day with 11 wins from 12 across the weekend. In pre-season, a young squad reached the final of the Prague Cup, beating the U20 national sides of Germany, Poland and the Czech Republic along the way.

Carina Walsh, Head of Lacrosse at Moreton Hall and head coach of the Wales women’s national team, leads the sessions; she took the squad to the World Lacrosse Women’s Championship in Tokyo this summer.

Lacrosse will feature at the Olympic Games for the first time since 1948 when the sixes format is played in Los Angeles in 2028, and participation in the UK has risen sharply as a result.

Michael Brewer, Principal of Moreton Hall, said: “Lacrosse returning to the Olympics in 2028 changes what the sport can offer a young player. For the first time in generations, there is a clear pathway from a school pitch to a Games, and girls who pick up a stick this year will be exactly the right age to benefit from it. We have coaching here that very few places can offer, and it seemed wrong to keep it to ourselves. Some of the girls who come on Saturday will never have held a stick before. One or two of them may find they have stumbled onto something they are very good at, and that is worth a free Saturday morning of anyone’s time.”
