The newly formed Oswestry Dark Morris has found a home at The Last Inn, Upper Hengoed, where the group will hold its meetings and practice sessions in the venue’s function room.

Founder Mike Lade said: “We are incredibly grateful to Libby Jones and her father, Chris Johns, of The Last Inn for allowing us to use their magnificent function room. It has everything we need, and having the bar on hand is an added bonus!”

The group’s first gathering will take place on 5 August.

Oswestry Dark Morris will perform Border Morris, one of the six main styles of Morris dancing.  Originating in the Welsh border counties of Shropshire, Herefordshire and Worcestershire, Border Morris is a high-energy, traditionally boisterous form of English folk dance.

Unlike other Morris traditions, Border Morris is characterised by energetic stick-clashing rather than handkerchief waving, simple stepping to music, colourful tattered rag coats, and disguised faces using masks or grease paint.

Historically, these disguises allowed performers to remain anonymous, helping agricultural labourers avoid recognition by landlords or prosecution while busking for extra income during the winter months.

The costumes and face coverings also reflect longstanding traditions of mystery, folklore and the supernatural. Naturally, the occasional pint of ale or cider has long been part of the tradition too.

Although Morris dancing dates back to Tudor times, Border Morris continues to thrive today through lively mixed-gender sides performing at pubs, folk festivals and community events across the UK.

In addition to dancers and musicians, Oswestry Dark Morris also welcomes followers—supporters who dress in the same distinctive costume as the performers and accompany the side at events. It’s a fun and sociable way to be involved without dancing.

The group welcomes anyone aged 16 and over who would like to become part of this exciting new venture.

No previous dance experience is required. Musicians with their own instruments—including flute, tin whistle, fiddle, guitar, recorder, banjo, accordion, concertina or drums—are also encouraged to get involved.
