A new musical opportunity for young people across Shropshire and the surrounding area is set to launch this September with the creation of the Oswestry Youth Orchestra.

Based at the brand-new Grove Performing Arts Centre at Oswestry School, the Oswestry Youth Orchestra will provide young musicians aged 9 to 18 with the opportunity to experience regular ensemble playing, develop their skills, and perform alongside other talented young players.

The orchestra has been created to support and enhance the excellent musical opportunities already available within schools, offering an additional pathway for young musicians to grow in confidence, improve their musicianship, and enjoy the experience of playing as part of a large, supportive ensemble.

Open to all young musicians of Grade 2 standard and above, the main orchestra has no audition requirement and aims to be as accessible as possible, with affordable fees and a welcoming approach. Less experienced players will have the chance to develop their ensemble skills alongside more advanced musicians, creating an inspiring environment where young performers can learn from one another.

For older and more experienced players, there will also be the opportunity to audition for the Oswestry Youth Chamber Orchestra, providing an additional challenge and the chance to explore more advanced repertoire.

Weekly rehearsals will take place on Tuesday evenings at the Grove Performing Arts Centre on the Oswestry School campus. The main orchestra will rehearse from 7.00pm to 8.15pm, followed by Chamber Orchestra rehearsals from 8.15pm to 9.00pm.

A free taster session will take place on Tuesday 15 September, giving young musicians the chance to come along, meet other players, experience the atmosphere, and discover what it is like to be part of this exciting new ensemble.
