A newly formed Morris dancing group has got off to a flying start, with 27 people attending the first weekly gathering of Oswestry Dark Morris.
The group held its inaugural Wednesday evening meeting and dance practice at The Last Inn in Upper Hengoed, bringing together dancers, musicians and those simply keen to enjoy the social side of this traditional form of English folk dance.
Founder Mike Lade said: “We had a fantastic first get-together with 27 people. Some came along to enjoy the social aspect, some to dance and, for many, it was their first experience of Morris dancing.
“With musicians playing a variety of instruments, it made for a really fun evening. With the guidance of experienced Morris dancers Deb and Andy May, we rehearsed two stick dances in the true Border Morris style.”
Border Morris is a lively and energetic style of English folk dance traditionally associated with the Welsh border counties of Shropshire, Herefordshire and Worcestershire. It is characterised by energetic stepping, music and the clashing of sticks.
When Oswestry Dark Morris begins performing in public, members will wear vibrant ‘tattered rag coats’, along with disguised faces using masks or face paint, reflecting the distinctive traditions associated with Border Morris.
The history of Morris dancing stretches back centuries, with records dating as far back as 1448. Border Morris was traditionally performed by agricultural labourers during the winter months as a form of busking or ‘cadging’ to earn extra money.
Today, the tradition is kept alive by lively, mixed-gender Morris sides across the UK, which perform at pubs, folk festivals and community gatherings.
Oswestry Dark Morris is now inviting more people to get involved. Anyone aged 16 or over is welcome to join as a dancer, with no previous experience required.
The group would also love to hear from musicians with their own instruments, including flute, tin whistle, fiddle, guitar, recorder, banjo, accordion, concertina or drum.
