Margaret Evans, has finally managed to drive-in to office as Lady Captain at Oswestry Golf Club, after a prolonged wait due to Covid restrictions.
Margaret was given the honour of being Ladies Captain for 2020, but due to the restrictions in place due to Covid, her year was severely curtailed, so the club decided to extend her year in office to 2021, allowing her the opportunity to run events, have their much supported away days and also the much anticipated drive-in.
Margaret joined Oswestry golf club in1966 for a year but women at that time were not encouraged. Her parents were members but only played socially. Margaret loved the game but not the house rules so gave up until 1993. Margaret rejoined Oswestry in 2004, enjoying the more open and relaxed membership and house rules and the wonderful Ladies section that has developed over the years.
Margaret says “It is an honour to be Captain of such an established golf club, and it is wonderful to be able to support my chosen charity which is the Shropshire blood trust, started by Dr O Conner who has a department named after him. It is the unit where my husband and hundreds of others have treatment for blood cancers, so it has been wonderful being able to raise funds to support the amazing work they do”
Despite the difficulties posed by Covid, Margaret has been tireless in her efforts to ensure the ladies continued to stay in touch even whilst the club was closed.. Margaret goes on to say “I decided to keep in touch with the ladies by email. I would use my poor husband as a cartoon character! The difficulties he was getting into. I used a picture quiz which took me days to work out and thought it would keep them busy during the darkest hours”.
Margaret says her memories will be of a great committee, very nice lady members including some very talented new members, two men’s Captains!! One holiday which took two years to happen, our new F&B manager taking over the catering and producing wonderful food and finally a beautiful golf course kept in pristine condition.
Margaret still has a few events to support this year and the highlight being her Lady Captains day, which is scheduled for Mid September
David Richards Men’s Captain says ‘We would like to place on record our thanks to Margaret for her patience shown during these difficult times and also her unwavering support for the ladies section, especially those who use the club as a social place to come and meet friends, which was seriously impacted during covid. Her enthusiasm and passion for keeping these ladies in touch with the goings on, was a wonderful gesture on her behalf”.
