A new free sensory support scheme has launched across Oswestry, giving children and adults access to sensory items when visiting local venues.
Created by Oswestry SEN Parents CIC, the Borrow a Bag Scheme aims to make everyday community spaces more accessible for people experiencing sensory overwhelm, anxiety, dysregulation or who simply need a little extra support while out and about.
Each bag contains a selection of carefully chosen items designed to help people regulate, reduce stress and feel more comfortable in busy public spaces. Such as ear defenders, fidgets, textures and breathing cards. Visitors simply need to ask a member of staff if they would like to borrow a bag during their visit and return it before they leave.
The Borrow a Bag Scheme has launched in eight locations across Oswestry:
Ascend
Oswestry Leisure Centre
Oswestry Library (with two bags available)
Oswestry Indoor Market
Home Bargains
Oswestry Climate Hub
Oswestry Memorial Hall
Chloe Elizabeth Dance Company
The initiative is part of Oswestry SEN Parents CIC’s ongoing commitment to making everyday places more welcoming and accessible for neurodivergent people, disabled people and anyone who may benefit from sensory support.
“We know that sensory overwhelm can happen anywhere and to people of all ages. Sometimes a small amount of support can make the difference between someone having to leave and being able to enjoy their time in the community. We hope these bags help more people feel confident visiting local venues, knowing support is available if they need it.”
Oswestry SEN Parents CIC would like to extend its heartfelt thanks to Oswestry & Borders Rotary Club and community members whose generous donations helped make the project possible.
The scheme is also launched in loving memory of Carys, a vibrant young person whose kindness, spirit and personality touched so many lives. Her loss continues to be felt deeply, and it is hoped that this lasting legacy will help others feel supported, understood and included within the community.
The Borrow a Bag Scheme reflects the organisations belief that creating an inclusive community doesn’t always require big changes, sometimes small bags can make a big difference.
Families, businesses and community groups interested in learning more about the scheme, or about becoming involved in future accessibility projects, are encouraged to contact Oswestry SEN Parents CIC via email: oswestrysenparents@gmail.com
