An Oswestry woman is celebrating a major milestone after graduating from Wrexham University this week – joining more than 1,300 students marking their academic achievements during the university’s autumn graduation ceremonies.

Sophie Foulkes, from Oswestry, graduated with a degree in Adult Nursing and is now working for the NHS in the Acute Medical Unit (AMU) at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.

Reflecting on her time at university, Sophie said:

“It’s such an exciting but also nerve-wracking day, but I’m so proud to be here.
My university experience was amazing – both my studies and placements have been fantastic, and so supportive, and it’s now led me to doing a job that I love.
I would really encourage anyone thinking about a career in Nursing to do it. Not only is it a hugely rewarding role where you make a difference every day, but we need more nurses. I’m incredibly proud to be a nurse.”

Sophie was one of more than 1,300 students who took to the stage at Wrexham University’s William Aston Hall this week to celebrate their achievements at the autumn graduations.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Joe Yates praised the hard work and dedication of this year’s graduates:

“Graduation is an incredibly special milestone in our academic calendar – a time to celebrate the determination and achievements of our students, and to recognise the support of their families, friends and our university community.
Our graduates embody the spirit of our new vision – confident, capable and community-minded individuals who will go on to make a valuable impact in their communities and professions.”

The ceremonies also marked the final graduation events for the University’s Chancellor, Colin Jackson CBE, who steps down from his role next month after six years. He described his time at Wrexham as “the greatest honour and privilege,” saying it had been “remarkable to see Wrexham University grow in so many ways.”

For Sophie, the celebrations mark both the end of her studies and the beginning of a rewarding career helping patients across Shropshire.

“It feels amazing to have reached this point,” she added. “I’ve loved my time at Wrexham and I’m excited for what’s next.”
