Oswestry Photographic Society wins Nine-Town Photographic Competition

Oswestry Photographic Society (OPS) are the proud winners of this year’s Nine Towns Interclub Photographic Competition.

Each year, photographic societies from Oswestry, Shrewsbury, Whitchurch, Newport, Stourport, Longmynd, Kidderminster, Bridgenorth and Ludlow compete against one another for a place in this friendly interclub competition. Although OPS have regularly been highly placed in this competition, winning this year gives them good reason to celebrate as 2026 also marks the 70th anniversary of the society. The inaugural meeting of OPS was held at the Bell Hotel in Oswestry on 4 May 1956 under the original name of the Oswestry and District Photographic Society. Since its foundation in 1956, OPS has continued to meet regularly and provide a varied programme for their members including illustrated talks by well-known national and international photographers, regular photoshoots and practical events together with a range of competitions.

Photography provides a fulfilling and rewarding way to relax, record our interests in art, nature and the wonderful landscapes around as well as providing an opportunity to socialise and learn how to improve skills with others who have similar interests. Photography can be enjoyed by anybody and does not require practitioners to have expensive cameras, particularly now that mobile phone camera technology is the major selling point of most mobile phone manufacturers. Each year the society organises an annual exhibition of members images in Oswestry Library. Their next exhibition will be in November. A warm welcome is extended to new members.
