The talented team at The Ironworks in Oswestry has created its largest sculpture to date: an overwhelmingly giant African giraffe, set to become the biggest recycled sculpture in the UK.
The striking new addition will tower over the sculpture park at an impressive 13 metres tall and weigh over three tonnes, completely eclipsing the current largest UK giraffe sculpture, which stands at 2.4 metres tall at Edinburgh Zoo.
To erect a sculpture of this magnitude, a crane will be required to assist with assembly. The Ironworks team is currently seeking support from local businesses that may be able to provide a crane for several days to help construct the enormous giraffe sculpture at the British Ironworks site in Oswestry.
Clive Knowles, Chairman of The Ironworks, is currently in discussions with Guinness World Records in hopes of having the sculpture officially recognised as a record holder, either within the UK or worldwide.
Crafted from over 10,000 pieces of assorted auto scrap metal, the sculpture has been carefully forged together to create the towering form of one of the world’s most beloved animals. Once assembled, the giraffe will be hand-painted with the iconic giraffe markings.
The sculpture will stand nearly three times the height of the world’s tallest real giraffe. The current record is held by “Forest,” a 12-year-old male giraffe at Australia Zoo in Queensland, who measures 5.7 metres tall.
Once the crane has been secured and the sculpture assembled, the mighty giraffe will be proudly displayed in the British Ironworks Sculpture Park in Oswestry, where visitors will be able to admire the extraordinary structure — and it certainly won’t be hard to spot.
