The National Garden Scheme have over 70 gardens in Powys opening this year, of which 19 will be open by arrangement. From the stunning 7-acre gardens at The Grove, Presteigne (LD8 2NS) with its arboretum and riverside walks, to the hidden and quirky town garden at 1 Church Bank in Welshpool (SY21 7DR), we have gardens to suit everyone.
Closer to Oswestry, Eve’s Garden near Llansantffraid (SY22 6TB), is filled with colour and scents from its magnificent borders and abundant roses. New to the NGS are The Old Pottery, also Llansantffraid (SY22 6UA) and Glan Yr Afon, Llangedwyn (SY10 9LQ), both of which have extensive plantings and plenty of surprises.
A trip out to Montgomery is always a delight, with its old-fashioned charm and acclaimed local shops. Nearby is Cuckoo Hall, Abermule (SY15 6DL) offering 1.5 acres with ponds and a meandering stream. Abermule is also home to Rock Mill (SY15 6NN), opening in May. This magical three-acre award-winning riverside garden is in a beautiful, wooded valley and has much to explore.
All these gardens can be found online at www.ngs.org.uk with the owner’s contact details, opening dates, and admission rates. Ideal for larger groups such as Garden Clubs, WI trips and other social organisations, these gardens can also be booked by smaller groups for private get-togethers and celebrations. Instead of booking a large, often expensive hotel for a family celebration, why not contact one of our garden owners? In most cases, tea and homemade cake is on offer, or you may prefer to organise your own party food and liaise with the owner. Whatever the occasion, we look forward to welcoming you to one of our glorious private gardens very soon!
