Over 80 enthusiastic walkers and runners took part in the annual Oswald’s Trail Sponsored Walk on Sunday, 3rd August, organised by the Oswestry & Cambrian Rotary Club. Thankfully, participants were spared the forecasted heavy rain and enjoyed a fantastic day outdoors.
This year’s walk followed the scenic route created by the Oswestry Ramblers Association, starting from Wilfred Owen Green, with participants choosing between 10 or 12.5 miles.
The cool and cloudy morning was perfect for walking, and by midday, the sun made an appearance—warming up the walkers as they reached the halfway point at the Oswestry Racecourse. There, they were greeted by Curtis Langley from The Movement Centre, along with Rotarians offering welcome cups of tea and delicious homemade cakes kindly baked by Fiona Jones.
While final fundraising totals are still being confirmed, the event is expected to have raised around £1,700 for The Movement Centre. The Rotary Club extends heartfelt thanks to all the walkers and runners for their support, and to Grum for capturing wonderful photos from the day.
Apart from a few wrong turns—and one detour due to a bull in a field—the event went smoothly and safely. A team from St John Ambulance was on hand, with one member patrolling the course on a motorbike to reach more remote sections if needed. Fortunately, their assistance wasn’t required, but the club is extremely grateful for their presence and support.
At the finish line, all participants received a certificate and a special commemorative badge. The badge design was chosen through a competition held at Our Lady and St Oswald’s Catholic Primary School, with John Paul (Year 3/4) announced as the overall winner. Runners-up and highly commended entries also received Booka Bookshop vouchers, presented during a school assembly by Rotarians Ian and Rhian before the end of the summer term.
The Oswald’s Trail Walk has become a cherished part of the Oswestry Annual Events Calendar, and planning is already underway for next year’s event, scheduled for Sunday, 2nd August 2026.
If you’d like to enjoy a lovely summer day walk in the beautiful surroundings of Oswestry, dust off your walking boots and keep an eye out for next year’s registration forms!
