The Polar Express rolled into Ellesmere on Friday night to bring a magical touch to the town’s Winter Festival celebrations.
Hundreds of people turned out to watch as Father Christmas toured the main streets aboard a large replica of the giant locomotive – complete with carriages — as part of a spectacular lantern procession.
Dozens of children and parents joined the parade after welcoming Santa’s arrival at the town’s canal wharf aboard an illuminated narrow boat before he set off to hand out presents at a Christmas grotto in the market hall.
Many of the youngsters had been involved in lantern-making sessions organised by the local Fizzgigs arts group. Members of the group had also skilfully created the realistic model of the steam engine and large-scale figures of characters featured in the 2004 Polar Express fantasy film.
The official switching-on of the town’s Christmas lights was performed in front of the old town hall by the Mayor, Councillor Liz Woodbridge, who praised the efforts of everyone involved in the festival.
Children from Ellesmere primary school and a local brass band kept the crowds entertained with carols and other festive music and a ferris wheel provided rides on the Cross Street car park.
The market hall and adjoining streets were packed with stalls offering food, drink and gift ideas while many brightly-decorated shops, cafes and other businesses stayed open late. First prize for the best-decorated shop window was awarded to The Sequel Trust.
The event was organised by the SY12 business enterprise in partnership with other local traders, Ellesmere Rotary Club, the carnival committee, Fizzgigs, the town council and other organisations.
