Cllr Duncan Kerr has secured approval from Oswestry Town Council for a commemorative plaque to be installed on the terraced house where musician Ian Hunter was born in 1939.
Ian Hunter became world famous in the early 1970s as the lead singer of Mott the Hoople. The band recorded songs written by David Bowie and famously toured with Queen as their support act before Queen achieved global success. Ian still writes and records music from his home in the USA.
Duncan said: “I have always been amazed by the many famous people connected to Oswestry. It took me a little while to track down the house where Ian Hunter was born, and I am grateful that the current owners share my enthusiasm to honour him. The plaque will include the lyric ‘Gonna be somebody, someday’, which may inspire the next generation.
“I am working on a few events on the day of the unveiling including the showing of a documentary about Mott the Hoople, some live music — hopefully featuring Ian’s grandson who lives locally — and a record fair. There has been a lot of interest online. I am grateful to the Town Council for funding the plaque and the publicity. Details of the unveiling date will be on their website.”
The picture shows Duncan with some of his own Ian Hunter records on the street where Ian was born, together with a mock-up of the plaque.
