Rotary Club members around the world are offering support to the victims of the war in the Ukraine – motivated by nothing more than ‘service above self’ – the Rotary motto.

Mike Lade from Oswestry Cambrian Rotary said, “Colleagues are channelling their donations to support Rotary-led programmes, because every penny in donations is tracked and accounted for because we only work through other Rotary clubs.

“The urgent requirement in the Ukraine is for medical equipment, dressings, tourniquets and drugs for the injured and the dying on the battlefields and in the bombed and destroyed buildings as the number one priority.

“Rotary International has unique contact with Rotary colleagues on the war frontline, at refugee crossing points and refugee centres. Rotary has “fingers on the pulse” and can source, on an international scale through its network of 1.2m members, target and deliver medical aid to the point of need.

“As for Oswestry Cambrian Rotary Club, we have donated £5,000 towards the appeal above for medical supplies etc.

“Oswestry Cambrian is twinned with the Rotary Club of Pomorie in Bulgaria which is located on the Black Sea. So far more than 30,000 refugees have escaped across the sea into the coastal towns of Bulgaria but haven’t been mentioned through the news channels. Cambrian have forwarded £1,350 to the Pomorie club which is in turn supporting special Ukrainian Food Banks and refugee families in their town and surrounding area. We look forward to our ongoing relationship with the Pomorie club.”

President Anna Pugh remarked that: “Our hearts are broken by the suffering affecting the Ukrainian people.  We are fortunate to be part of the Rotary organisation knowing that our support will be channelled to front-line agencies.”

Oswestry Cambrian Rotary Club is ready to welcome individuals and couples of 18+ from the local community who want to be “people of action”.  We meet face-to-face at The Wynnstay Hotel, Church Street, Oswestry on Thursday evenings at 7.30pm and meet up in the bar. Alternatively, people can join the meeting from wherever they are via our Zoom account connection.
