Tickets for a special event at Ellesmere library to mark the 80th anniversary of V. E Day have sold out. But staff and volunteers have now arranged to repeat it two weeks later.

Locals have been invited to step back to the 1940s on Saturday, May 10 to sample “a taste of wartime,” with a talk about World War 2 rationing and a look at how people devised alternative recipes to overcome food shortages.

Demand for tickets has been so great that library manager Sheila Williams has organised a ‘second helping’ to avoid disappointing those who missed out. The repeat presentation will be held on Saturday, May 24 from 2pm-3.30. It will feature a look inside a wartime pantry, based on research by library volunteers Peter Smith and Janet Courtney into how Britain coped with rationing.

Dressed in period costume, Janet and library assistant Sally Poynton will get together for a ‘neighbourly gossip around the kitchen table’ where they’ll discuss the state of the war and its effect on households in Ellesmere.

Tickets are priced at £3, to include to include tea, Camp coffee and samples of wartime food. Seatine is limited to to 30 and bookings must be made in advance using cash only.
