Tucked away in the rolling hills near Oswestry, Shropshire, Selattyn CE Primary School is a shining example of how small schools can deliver big impact. With a passionate commitment to outdoor learning, this rural gem offers children the chance to grow, explore, and thrive in nature-rich surroundings.
From forest school adventures to hands-on gardening and wildlife conservation, outdoor learning is at the heart of Selattyn’s approach. It’s more than just fresh air studies show that learning outside boosts confidence, resilience, and wellbeing. At Selattyn, these benefits are part of everyday life.
The school itself is steeped in history. Housed in a beautifully restored Victorian stone building, Selattyn CE Primary has evolved over the years to meet the needs of modern learners. Alongside its original classrooms and library, the site now includes demountable classrooms, a spacious hall, a multi-purpose study room, and a dedicated outdoor classroom. The grounds are a living classroom, with vegetable gardens and wildlife areas lovingly tended by pupils and staff alike.
As a Church of England controlled school, Selattyn maintains strong ties with the local church and clergy. Its Christian ethos fosters a sense of belonging and spiritual growth, reflected in its motto: “Small School, Big Heart.” Every child is known, valued, and supported within this close-knit community.
To help working families, the school offers full wraparound care from 8am to 5pm providing a safe, engaging environment for children throughout the day. It’s just one of the many ways Selattyn goes the extra mile for its families.
