Severn Trent has issued guidance for Shropshire households as Storm Goretti is set to bring snow, ice, rain, and strong winds to the county.
The Met Office has issued snow and ice warnings for Thursday and Friday as Storm Goretti — named by French forecasters as the first storm of the year — moves across the region.
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has also extended its amber cold weather alert across England until midday Sunday.
Severn Trent has now reminded Shropshire customers about who to contact in the event of flooding and confirmed that its teams are ready to respond to any storm-related incidents. They’ve also shared practical advice on protecting outdoor pipes to help prevent burst pipes and maintain water supply during the cold snap.
Scott Ludford, from Severn Trent’s Network Control team, said:
“We are expecting some very wintery conditions across Shropshire this week. Our teams are prepared to respond to any storm-related incidents.
“Storm Goretti is forecast to bring snow, ice, heavy rain, and strong winds, and we know how stressful flooding or burst pipes can be. We want to ensure people know who to contact and how to protect their homes during the cold weather.”
Flooding Advice for Shropshire Residents
-
Local roads, small rivers, and streams: Contact your local council (e.g., Shropshire Council) to report flooding on roads, blocked drains, or highways grates. Councils can also advise on surface water, groundwater, and flooding from small rivers, brooks, or streams such as the River Perry or local brooks around Oswestry or Ludlow.
-
Major river flooding: For larger rivers such as the River Severn or River Teme, contact the Environment Agency. Their Floodline number is 0345 988 1188, and more information is available on their website.
-
Sewer flooding or burst pipes: If water is coming from the public sewer system, contact Severn Trent directly. If flooding is due to heavy rain, you may need to wait for water levels to subside before we can investigate. Remember to contact your insurer for support and advice.
Steps to Reduce Flood Risk at Home
-
Empty any water butts before the storm to reduce pressure on drains.
-
Check that home and garden drains are free-flowing — clear leaves or debris.
-
Check nearby roadside drains around your property and clear any blockages, or contact Shropshire Council if blocked.

Protecting Pipes During Cold Weather
Severn Trent advises customers to insulate outdoor pipes and know the location of their stop tap in case of leaks.
Howard Perry, Network Operations Lead, said:
“Freezing conditions followed by warmer weather can cause pipes to burst. Ice expands inside pipes, which may block them or cause damage when thawing.
“A few minutes spent insulating pipes in lofts, garages, sheds, and outside taps can save a lot of hassle this winter. Pipe lagging and tap jackets are available at local hardware stores.
“Knowing where your stop tap is — usually under the kitchen sink, downstairs toilet, or utility room — is essential in case of a leak.”
Top Tips for Protecting Pipes in Shropshire
-
Wrap pipes, fittings, and water tanks in unheated areas such as lofts, garages, or outbuildings with waterproof foam insulation.
-
Insulate or drain outside taps, particularly in gardens or allotments.
-
If unsure, consult a qualified plumber via watersafe.org.uk.
-
If you experience low water pressure or no water, first check if neighbors are affected. If only your property is affected, call a plumber; if multiple properties are impacted, contact Severn Trent’s 24-hour emergency line: 0800 783 4444.
