Members of a ‘little’ committee are celebrating after delivering a mighty boost to local cancer services.

Working to spread awareness and boost funds for the region’s primary cancer charity, the Shrewsbury Fundraising Committee for Lingen Davies has donated over £250,000 since July 2021 to support local people affected by cancer.

To raise funds, the voluntary group host a wide range of fundraising events across Shrewsbury and the wider area to enhance the work of local charity Lingen Davies Cancer Support.

Angela Hill, Community Fundraiser for Lingen Davies Cancer Support and Chair for the Shrewsbury Committee, said: “Every year we’ve delivered a fantastic variety of events and fundraisers to help raise vital funds for Lingen Davies.

“We’ve run coffee mornings and afternoon teas, hosted bingo nights and floral demonstrations, collaborated with local Young Farmers groups and Livestock Auction Houses, done Christmas bucket collections at Theatre Severn, and held extravagant summer lunches to raise this money – all of which has been so worthwhile.

“Many of our members do this alongside full-time jobs and other commitments, so we’re incredibly proud of this achievement.”

All money raised by the Shrewsbury Fundraising Committee for Lingen Davies has been donated to Lingen Davies Cancer Support to help the charity continue making a positive difference for local people living with and beyond cancer in Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin, and Mid Wales.

Colin Bore, Treasurer for the Shrewsbury Committee, said: “When our little committee first got together, we could have never dreamt that five years on we would be celebrating having raised £250,000 for Lingen Davies.

“Enormous thanks to all our faithful supporters who show up to all our events, to all those who donate so generously, and to everyone who organises fundraisers and invites us along to be part of the success. Our gratitude to you is immeasurable.

“Here’s to the next five years and what that might bring!” he added.

The Shrewsbury Fundraising Committee for Lingen Davies is one of three voluntary groups dedicated to supporting the work of the cancer charity. Other groups exist in Montgomeryshire and North Shropshire to help spread awareness of the work Lingen Davies Cancer Support is doing to make a positive difference for those living with and beyond cancer, and boost vital funds to ensure this good work continues.

Last year Lingen Davies Cancer Support launched its biggest appeal to date – a £5million Sunflower Appeal to grow cancer care across the region through the development of the Lingen Davies Cancer Centre at Telford’s Princess Royal Hospital by 2029.

This development will double chemotherapy capacity and ensure everyone from the counties have access to the care they need, where they need, quicker.
