Stage time with Coleen Nolan
By Victoria McKenna
The Thunder Girls is coming to town! Coleen Nolan (Loose Women), Beverley Callard (Coronation Street), Carol Harrison (Eastenders) and Gary Webster (ITV’s Minder) star in this explosive play. Originally a novel written by Melanie Blake and now brought to life in an explosive stage adaption. An 80’s girl band, reunite thirty years after their break up, torn apart by greed and envy – what could possibly go wrong? Witness the explosive dinner where all the cards are on the table. The play broke box office records at its preview last year and is going nationwide with fantastic reviews under its belt.
I spoke to Coleen about the play and how she feels about being on stage and some of the themes underpinning it.
This is a first for Coleen and a big step in both her work and personal lives. Asking what triggered her to accept this empowering role, Coleen said, “Now being in my 50’s, the kids have grown up and I’m recently divorced, I decided I’m going to do this for me. Before my kids were too young for me to go on tour.” This should resonate with some ladies out there who have juggled a few things over a number of years, to then have the opportunity to review how they wish to move in to a new phase.
Coleen is a real advocate of there being more opportunities for women over 50. With the play embracing characters and actresses in their 50’s, it’s no surprise that the author Melanie Blake had to put in a fight to actually have such a cast in reality.
Coleen said, “Life’s not over when you’re in your 50’s. That’s why I love Loose Women, because it covers all ages and everyone is given a chance.” If you’re at this stage in life you should “…feel the fear and get on with it. Don’t sit back.” Advice direct from Coleen for anyone out there at a crossroads.
Coleen Nolan stars in UK national tour of The Thunder Girls, which opens at Theatre Severn, Shrewsbury from Tuesday 15 until Saturday 19 September. All tickets £29.50.
