It was “eyes down” for a “full house” at The Highwayman pub in Oswestry on Wednesday 30th July, as they hosted a fun-filled Bingo Night to raise money for Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin – a local charity that supports older people.
The event raised £348 and was enjoyed by approximately 30 people. Players made a donation of £12 which entitled them to participate in eight games of bingo. Prizes included a slow cooker, bottles of wine, toiletry sets and chocolate.
“We’re incredibly grateful to everyone who joined us and to the staff at The Highwayman for so generously hosting the fundraiser,” said Reg Lacey, Service Development Officer at Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin. “It was a great night and every penny we raised will go towards helping older people in Shropshire.”
The Bingo Night was part of the charity’s 75th anniversary appeal which aims to raise £75,000 to help tackle loneliness among older people.
The charity says that approximately 10,000 older people across Shropshire would describe themselves as ‘deeply lonely’. It aims to tackle this social isolation through its befriending services where they match an older person with one of their volunteers who then telephones or visits them on a regular basis to provide companionship. The charity also provides a wide range of social opportunities and activities to improve the lives and welfare of older people.
