The Marches School recently received some fantastic news upon taking part in the annual Rotary Club Young Writer’s Competition.
The students were tasked with writing a short story under the title ‘Connections’. They explored this topic and completed various tasks on the theme during their English Lessons, before independently creating their own story based on their ideas without teacher support to submit for the competition.
Rotarians Mr Peter Martin, Mr Justin Soper and Mrs Sherie Soper (Assistant District Governor for the Rotarians), judged the shortlisted entries and visited the school this week to award the following results:
1st – Olivia Evans, Year 9.
2nd – Scarlett Devereux, Year 9.
3rd – Amy Bryan, Year 8.
Highly Commended – Isabel Harper-Davies, Year 7; Cameron McNeil, Year 8.
Olivia will now go on to be entered into the District Intermediate Final representing the Rotary Club of Oswestry. She also won the John Cranwell Award, in memory of the former Borderland member. This allowed The Marches to retain the trophy for another year after beating stiff competition from several schools in the area.
Miss Shona Wilson, KS3 Coordinator of English at The Marches commented; “The students and the English Department have put in a huge amount of effort and I am incredibly happy for them that it has paid off. The students worked really hard and submitted some fantastic entries. Congratulations to all who received awards and we now look forward to seeing Olivia’s progress through the competition.”
