The sun was shining and spirits were high as 187 walkers and runners took part in the Derwen 10km Challenge on Saturday, 5 April, raising vital funds for Derwen Charity.
Students, staff, families, and local running clubs joined forces for the annual event, which helps fund life-changing experiences and opportunities for students at Derwen College, a specialist college for young adults aged 16–25 with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).
The inclusive event offered a 10km and 6km route through the beautiful Shropshire countryside, as well as a 1km Teddy Trail led by the College’s much-loved therapy dog, Teddy.
Participants completed the challenge in their own way – some running competitively, with the first finishers crossing the line in under 45 minutes, and others enjoying a more leisurely walk. Running clubs including Ellesmere Runners, Oswestry Olympians, and the Shropshire Shufflers were out in force.
Olive Morris, aged 81, took part in her 56th Derwen College sponsored walk, while 19-year-old student Lydia completed the full 10km run. Former students Justin Harley and Bethan Charles were amongst those who returned especially for the event.
Meanwhile, Jan and Glyn Hughes, members of the Shufflers, celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary by running the route together.
“We’re so grateful to everyone who came along to make it such a wonderful day,” said Megan Charman, Derwen Charity Events Coordinator and Community Fundraiser.
“The energy was amazing, with students cheering every walker and runner to the finish line. Special thanks to student Ronan and his family, who raised an incredible £690, and Emily and her family, who raised £200 in sponsorship!”
The next big date in the calendar is the Derwen Fete and Dog Show on 14 June – the College’s biggest fundraiser of the year. Everyone is invited to join in the fun and help raise money to support the incredible work of Derwen College.
