Shrewsbury Abbey church is the venue on Saturday 16th July at 7.30pm for a performance of Feel the Spirit by English composer John Rutter and Misa Criolla by Argentine composer, pianist and music director  Ariel Ramirez.

Both compositions will be performed by Shrewsbury Choral, accompanied by distinguished tenor Jonathan Cooke and highly renowned mezzo-soprano Felicity Buckland, with the performances conducted by the urbane Dr Martin Cook.

Martin Cook, conductor said: “Criolla Misa, is a mass based on folk genres such as chacarera, carnavalito and estilo pampeano, with Andean influences and instruments and it will be ideal for our acclaimed soloists; tenor Jonathan Cooke and mezzo-soprano Felicity Buckland,

and indeed the superlative voices of Shrewsbury Choral. As one of the first masses to be celebrated in a modern language, and written between 1963 and1964 by Ramirez, the audience will be both excited and moved by this special masterpiece.

John Rutter, English composer and conductor; of international fame is well-known to Shrewsbury Choral audiences as we have performed his illustrious works on many occasions. Feel the Spirit is a cycle of seven familiar spirituals, expertly arranged by John Rutter and explores the rich heritage of spirituality.  He is accomplished at the composition of sacred choral works that really do lift the spirit.  This work will bring new meaning to well-loved titles such as Steal Away, I got a Robe and When the Saints go Marching in …The work brings new life to well-loved titles such as Steal away, I got a Robe, and When the Saints go Marching In… amongst many other favourites that Shrewsbury Choral are going to showcase their musicality!”
