Ever thought about taking up running but don’t fancy going it alone? Or maybe you’re already on your running journey and looking for some company to share the miles – and the smiles – with. Either way, the Oswestry Olympians might just be the perfect fit for you.

Based right here on the Shropshire-Powys border, they’re a friendly bunch who believe running is for everyone—whether you’re just starting out or you’ve got a marathon (or three) under your belt. With over 140 members and counting, the club is all about community, encouragement, and a good dose of fun. Some love a casual jog and a chat, while others thrive on the thrill of races – road, fell, or multi-terrain – both locally and across the UK.

The Oswestry Olympians was established 44 years ago and has always been a friendly and welcoming club. “We regard ourselves as the friendliest club in Shropshire and our club moto is – nobody gets left behind,” says Club Chairman, Dave Newton.

“Members of both our Juniors and Seniors sections may not be regarded as the fastest runners, but we coach and support those who want to improve their running.

Ultimately we provide an environment for enjoying running and athletics, trying new experiences and it’s also a great opportunity to meet new people and make friends. Many of our members come to club sessions for the social aspect. It’s amazing how many miles you can cover as you are chatting away to your friends.”

The Oswestry club is inclusive, and you don’t need to be an athlete to be a member. Open to all abilities, the Oswestry Olympians love celebrating the success of all member’s achievements, whether it’s improving a short run time or completing a first marathon.

If you’re thinking of investing in some trainers and giving running a go, the health benefits are convincing enough, it can…

  • Reduce stress and boost mood
  • Improve cardiovascular fitness and heart health
  • Improve your mental resilience

But remember, joining a running club isn’t just about the exercise. It’s about finding your tribe, setting goals together, and celebrating every achievement – big or small. It’s that extra bit of motivation on a rainy day, the shared laughter after a tough run, and the friendships you build along the way.

Run with the club socially or you can register with England or Wales Athletics alongside when you join, allowing you to compete in organised runs as a club member.

So why not come along and see what they’re all about? After all, every great journey starts with a single step – or in Oswestry Olympian’s case, a few friendly strides!
