A Wrexham lawyer who gave a whole new meaning to ‘cycling to the office’ when he launched the ‘Tour de GHP’ charity event last year, has sent out a plea for more donations after successfully completing the 65 mile trip for a second time during last week’s heatwave.
Robert Williams, a Partner with GHP Legal, came up with the idea of raising money for charity by cycling between his firm’s offices in Wrexham, Oswestry, Chirk and Llangollen, finishing with a climb over the Horseshoe Pass before returning to Wrexham.
Whilst last year’s event took place in October in torrential rain and hail, Robert and his cycling companions, Paul Ffoulkes of Barclays Bank and Medwyn Edwards of Hadlow Edwards, this year endured unusually high temperatures which made their climb over the Horseshoe Pass particularly difficult.
“After raising more than £1,500 last year for British Heart Foundation,” says Robert, “we are a little disappointed that we currently only have £390 pledged for our efforts this year, which was on behalf of Nightingale House Hospice.
“Over the next 12 months it will cost around £8,600 per day to run Nightingale House which provides a wide range of facilities to local people and their families living with life-limiting illness.
“I am part of a team that is undertaking a ten-day challenge in Vietnam and Cambodia to raise more money for them in November, cycling up to 250 miles between Ho Chi Minh City and Angkhor Wat Temple. The team are fund raising with different events all year and have raised over £30,000 so far, all for the hospice. For now though, it is not too late for people to reward the hospice for our endurance of a very warm ride over the Horseshoe Pass last week.
