Oswestry School’s new Modern Pentathlon Club has made an impressive competitive debut, with 21 pupils from across the Prep and Senior Schools securing nine podium finishes at the UIPM Global Laser Run City Tour in Liverpool.

Laser Run is a fast-paced sporting discipline combining running with laser pistol shooting. Competitors run a set distance before stopping at a shooting range to hit five targets with a laser pistol, repeating the run and shooting stages according to their age category. The sport tests speed, endurance, accuracy, concentration and the ability to perform under pressure.

Oswestry pupils competed alongside around 500 school athletes and enjoyed a particularly successful day, with Pip (Year 5) and Joseph (Year 8) taking gold, while Oliver (Year 5), Charlotte (Year 6) and Thomas (Year 10) claimed silver. George (Year 6), Hettie (Year 6), Lottie (Year 8) and Maisey (Year 12) took bronze.

Oswestry School Modern Pentathlon Coach Cayley Lay said:

“What a fantastic start for our brand-new Modern Pentathlon Club. To take 21 pupils to our first Laser Run competition as a club and come away with nine podium finishes is a brilliant achievement. What impressed me most was the enthusiasm, determination and team spirit shown throughout the day. It was wonderful to see pupils from across the Prep and Senior Schools competing together, supporting one another and embracing the challenge. The event gave our pupils the opportunity to test themselves against strong competition and experience the excitement of a major Laser Run event. We are only at the beginning of our Modern Pentathlon journey at Oswestry School, and I’m really excited to see where we can take it from here.”

The event provided pupils with the opportunity to compete against athletes with varying levels of experience, challenge themselves in a new competitive environment and develop their confidence.

Three Oswestry pupils also competed in the individual and relay Laser Run competitions on the Sunday as members of Pentathlon GB. Pip secured individual bronze and mixed relay silver, Joseph finished fifth individually, and Thomas took individual bronze and mixed relay silver.

The Liverpool event was the final major domestic racing opportunity ahead of the UIPM World Laser Run Championships in Madeira.

The new Modern Pentathlon Club is part of Oswestry School’s commitment to providing pupils with opportunities to discover new interests, develop their talents and challenge themselves through sport.

For the 21 pupils who represented the School in Liverpool, it was a memorable start to the club’s competitive journey.
