An art space in Oswestry market is marking a successful year with the return of its winter exhibition of work by local artists.

The Market Gallery (Oriel Farchnad) opened in Oswestry Town Market in September 2024 as a temporary location for showing the work of a number of local artists. Since then, it has developed into a community art space, hosting diverse exhibitions by wide-ranging individuals and groups.

Running through to the New Year, Advent 2 features signature work by 19 artists who have exhibited in 2025, including paintings, multimedia composition, photography and collage.

Curator and artist, Robert Lawton, has been delighted with the interest being shown by both locals and visitors.

He said: “The gallery is growing in popularity and proving to be a beneficial initiative for the town market and local art scene.

“It offers artists a rare opportunity to share their artwork in a central, public venue without commercial pressure. Traders in the Powis market hall have also been encouraged by the interest and footfall attracted by the busy exhibition schedule.”

He added: “Previews for each new exhibition take place on the last Friday of the month, to fit in with the market’s late night opening. These are open invitation evenings that enable the artists and wider public to meet and connect in a relaxed atmosphere.”

Boosted by the positive impact, Rob says that an expanded programme of exhibitions is planned for 2026.

In collaboration with Oswestry Town Council, the gallery project is part of ongoing initiatives to evolve the visitor appeal and community role of Oswestry’s award-winning street and indoor market.

Advent 2 runs until January 28, with viewing during advertised market hours. Located on the first floor, the gallery benefits from both ramp and lift access.
