Oswestry Town Council has appointed local contractor Jones Brothers of Weston Rhyn to deliver the improvements to the public toilets on English Walls, Oswestry.

Improving Oswestry’s public toilet facilities has been a Council priority for a number of years and elected Councillors agreed to progress this refurbishment back in April, with consultation undertaken in August 2023.

Plans include a ‘Changing Places’ facility, so that everyone, regardless of their access needs, disability, or reliance on the assistance of carers or specialist equipment, can use a toilet facility hygienically and with dignity. The new facilities will recognise the needs of those people with learning disabilities and profound physical disabilities such as spinal injuries, muscular dystrophy, and multiple sclerosis.

The refurbishment contract was awarded following a public tender exercise and a decision on the award of the contract by Council.

Oswestry Town Mayor, Cllr Rose comments. “These toilets will be inclusive; it is important we provide a safe and dignified space that is suitable for everyone in our community.” She added “Some people require extra equipment and space to allow them to use the toilets safely and comfortably. Changing Places toilets will make a real difference and enable anyone, regardless of their disability, to visit our town and enjoy community life – things that most of us take for granted every day. We are pleased to be progressing the work and look forward to working with Jones Brothers.”

Other changes will see improvements to the existing provision, including four individual unisex cubicles with hand washing facilities, and investment in the fabric of the building. Most of the cost will be met from the Smithfield Windfall Capital Receipt together with grant monies, offsetting the total project cost.

Work will begin in early December and will be completed by the end of March 2024.

During the planned works, the toilets will be closed, however the public may use the free toilet facilities at Cae Glas Park and Oswestry’s Guildhall – both locations have disabled toilets.

The Town Council apologises for any inconvenience caused.
