Concrete specialists from a Shropshire company are celebrating after winning a prestigious UK industry award.
The team from TG Concrete – part of the Tudor Griffiths Group in Ellesmere – have received a coveted Golden Trowel trophy for their work on the innovative polished coloured concrete floor at Hencote Vineyard Estate near Shrewsbury.
TG Concrete general manager, Dave Morris, said the award was wonderful recognition for the project which had created a stunning floor at the centrepiece of the county’s latest visitor attraction.
“We joined forces with Concrete Polishing, from Oswestry, for the Hencote project, and we used the product on the 450 sq m floor of the new restaurant. Thanks to the floor-to-ceiling windows around the room, it’s a spectacular setting to show off the mirrored finish and the real wow factor that the polished concrete delivers.
“We’re delighted that the judges in this year’s Golden Trowel Awards chose us as the winners in the Polished and Power Floated Flooring category – it’s a real honour to have been recognised for such an ambitious and exciting project.”
The concrete placing was carried out by Richard Hares Groundworks for AC Jackson who were the main build contractors.
To create the mirror finish, Martin Clarke (from Concrete Polishing) mechanically refined the surface once it was set through grinding, polishing and chemical treatments. The mix was made up of a golden shingle aggregate combined with sand from the Tudor Griffiths Group’s own quarry, and the coloured concrete finish was pewter.
The process involved heavily grinding the concrete to expose the aggregate, and using varying sizes of diamond tools – similar to sanding wood – to achieve a flatter surface and to create a premium finish. The result is a low maintenance and dust free floor, and because the process will have increased the surface strength by up to 400%, it will be extremely robust giving greater longevity.
The Golden Trowel Awards were launched 13 years ago and the competition has gone from strength to strength as the use of decorative concrete for both domestic and commercial projects has increased.
